The Perfect 3-Day Acadia Hiking (And More!) Itinerary 🏔️🌊🚶‍♂️

Consider this the “iconic Acadia” checklist.

We’ve been putting our heads together at Maine Hikes for a perfect 3-day itinerary to cover all the must-see sights in Acadia National Park. We’re biased, of course, so the ultimate list ended up with a lot of hiking 😁. Regardless, in these three days, your lobster-fueled muscles will take you to some of the best views in the United States. Day three even features a morning bike ride 🚲 and a sunset kayak adventure 🌅!

Because these are indeed iconic spots, we’ve also made some recommendations to avoid the crowds. In fact, we even skipped the most common recommendation we see for Acadia because of the crowds (we’re looking at you, sunrise at Cadillac). But don’t worry, we have another stunning sunrise rec. If you’re a frequent flier to Acadia, be on the lookout for another article this summer - the hidden side of Acadia. Subscribe and you won’t miss it!

Full disclosure — these are three full, epic days. So if you’re booking a flight or driving from afar, we recommend some travel days on the ends. Don’t have a car, and don’t plan to rent one? You can do 90% of our recommendations by taking the free Acadia shuttle!

Alright, so you’ve seen the summary and you’re intrigued…check out the details below for the insider tips to beat the crowds (including parking by taking the free — yes, free — shuttle), eat the best meals, and bask in the best views.

Day 1 - The Details

Views on Ocean Path

🌅 Sunrise at Otter Cliffs (Skip Cadillac’s Crowds!)

💡 Want the sunrise without the reservation stress and crowds? Otter Cliffs is your spot. This rugged coastal viewpoint along Park Loop Road offers unobstructed ocean views as the first rays of sun light up the waves.

🧗‍♀️ You might even spot some early-morning climbers scaling the cliffs.

👉 Pro Tip: Arrive 30 minutes before sunrise, bring a blanket and a thermos of coffee, and soak it all in.

🥾 Morning Stroll: Ocean Path (Otter Cliffs to Sand Beach) – Easy

🚶‍♂️ 2 miles one way | Difficulty: Easy | Trail map

🌊 This classic walk follows the rocky coastline, with plenty of spots to stop and explore.

⚡ Highlights include Thunder Hole (if the waves are big, you’ll hear why) and Sand Beach, where the North Atlantic’s icy waters remind you that yes, this is still Maine 😂 AND it’s where the co-owner of Maine Hikes, Ashley Mehl, got engaged! 💍

Gorham Mountain summit views

Breakfast Picnic at Sand Beach

🥓 Speaking of Sand Beach, you can’t go wrong with a beachside breakfast. Pack a picnic-style meal and enjoy it with your toes in the sand. (Or bundled in a hoodie—check the weather.)

🥾 Summit Climb: Gorham Mountain Trail – Moderate

🚶‍♂️ Distance: 2.5 miles (complete the Sand Beach ➡ Gorham Mtn ➡ Otter Cliff portion of the loop) | Difficulty: Moderate | Trail Map

🌄 This underappreciated summit gives you incredible coastal views without the Beehive-level adrenaline.

🍽️ Lunch in Bar Harbor

🏫 After a morning of hiking, it’s time for some town time. Bar Harbor has tons of great spots, from casual lobster shacks to sit-down seafood feasts.

👉 Pro Tip: Grab takeout and find a bench with a harbor view to avoid the lunch rush.

🥾 Afternoon Hike (Optional): Ship Harbor Trail

🚶‍♂️ Distance: 1.3 miles round trip | Difficulty: Easy | Trail Map

🌲 If you’re up for one more easy trail, this peaceful loop on the quieter side of the island offers rocky coastline, forest, and tidepools.

😴 If you’re feeling wiped? Power nap time instead.

Bass Harbor Head Lighthouse

🦞 Dinner in Southwest Harbor

🤐 Head to the quieter side of the island for a proper lobster dinner. Some of the best lobster shacks are tucked away here. But if you haven’t been before, Beal’s is a must.

🌅 Sunset at Bass Harbor Head Lighthouse

🚨 One of the most iconic Acadia views. The lighthouse sits dramatically on a rocky ledge, and when the sky lights up, it’s absolutely magical.

👉 Pro Tip: Arrive at least an hour before sunset (yes, it gets that busy), OR even better, leave 45 minutes BEFORE sunset, and drive to Seal Cove Picnic Area, where the sunset is just as good, without the crowds.

Day 2 - The Details

Climbing the iron rungs on Beehive

🥾 Pre-Crowd Summit: Beehive Trail – Hard (or Bowl Trail – Moderate)

💡 If you’re into adventure, the Beehive Trail is a thrilling climb with iron rungs and cliffside ledges. Not a fan of heights? The Bowl Trail gets you to the same stunning views—without the heart-pounding exposure.

🐝 Beehive: 1.5 miles | Strenuous (iron rungs & exposed cliffs) | Trail Map

🥣 Alternative: Bowl Trail: 2.6 miles | Moderate | Trail Map

👉 Pro Tip: Start before 8 AM to avoid waiting in line on the iron rungs.

Views halfway up Cadillac Mountain

🚘 Drive to Cadillac’s Summit

🌄 No hiking required! Take the scenic drive to the highest point in Acadia and explore the short summit trails.

🧾 Reservations are required, so book your entry pass in advance.

🥐 Lunch at Jordan Pond House (Popovers Required!)

😋Jordan Pond House is famous for its popovers and tea—and trust us, they’re worth it.

🧾 Reservations fill fast, so book ahead or try an off-peak time.

🥾 Afternoon Stroll: Jordan Pond Loop & South Bubble

The Jordan Pond Loop (3.3 miles) is easy, scenic, and iconic.

Want a bonus challenge? Add the short but steep climb to South Bubble for a bird’s-eye view of the pond.

🦞 Dinner in Bar Harbor

After a day full of adventure, settle in for a relaxing seafood dinner.

Day 3 - The Details

☕ Morning Stroll: Bar Harbor Shore Path

🚶‍♀️ Shore Path: 1.5 miles | Easy | Trail Map

😚 Start your day with a coffee in hand and a quiet walk along Bar Harbor’s historic shoreline.

👉 Pro Tip: If you need a caffeine boost, Choco-Latte in Bar Harbor is a great pre-hike stop.

👉 Don’t feel like you need to do the whole route. Start the walk from your coffee shop and turn around when you’re feeling energized enough to hop on a bike!

🚴‍♂️ Bike the Carriage Roads

😎 Acadia’s car-free carriage roads are perfect for biking, and you’ll use some different muscles from all those hikes!

💦 Rent a bike in Northeast Harbor from Island Bike Rental and ride straight from the shop to the 4.2 mile Hadlock Loop - you’ll pass an epic waterfall (Hadlock Falls)!

👉Pro tip: Your starting point will be different, but use AllTrails to follow along on this route as you go.

🦞 Lunch: Last-Day Lobster Feast

🐟 Go all out for your final Maine meal at Thurston’s or anothah local lobstah shack.

🛒 Souvenir & Ice Cream Stop

🍦 Grab a sweet treat

😁 Check out local shops and mainehikes.org for Acadia souvenirs (free shipping so you don’t have to hold your breath weighing your bag at the airport).

🛶 Sunset Sea Kayak Tour

🦅 Expect calm waters, wildlife sightings (bald eagles and seals are common), and golden-hour magic.
