Did someone say golden hour? Check out these Midcoast Maine hikes around sunrise or sunset for a quintessential Maine vibe, and bask in the serenity of the trail less traveled.

1. MOUNT WALDO

This hike is the second highest peak in Waldo County, and by far has the best golden hour views. Mountains such as Camden Hills, Acadia, and even Katahdin can be seen from the summit. With 4 different trails available, there is ton of opportunity for exploration. However, for the best golden hour views the South Trail is the way to go. Mostly forested, glimpses of the nearby mountains and small openings continue to get better and better until you reach the top. Whether you’re a sunrise or sunset type of person, Mount Waldo is guaranteed to blow your mind.

2. Moose Point

On the Midcoast it doesn’t get much better than a coastal breeze and the warm sun on your face. That’s exactly the type of experience you can have at Moose Point State Park. Best for sunrise, the Moose & Big Spruce Loop Trail will take you along the shore out to the tip of Moose Point. There are several points before and along the trail where you can soak up some views of waves and islands nearby. Wildlife lovers may also get to start their day with some of the local eagles and heron seen in the park. The loop is short and relatively flat, making it an easy hike for hikers of all ages.

3. Mount Battie

When it comes to Midcoast hiking, Camden Hills State Park is basically essential. There are countless great lookouts in the park, but when it comes to golden hour you will want to be at the Mount Battie tower. Without a doubt it’s a well known and visited spot for good reason. 360° views make this hike unforgettable for both sunrise and sunset. As for the best trail, your best bet is to go the Mount Battie Road or Carriage Road Trail. Attempting the Mount Battie trail in the dark could be very dangerous.

4. Haystack Mountain

Another hike that is for the golden hour lovers, but might not be the most popular choice is Haystack Mountain in Liberty. This little Midcoast treasure is tucked in by Lake Saint George State Park and has views that go on and on. The loop that runs on the western side of the mountain is ideal for sunset, which does illuminate the forest beautifully. The eastern side has open skies and runs through blueberry fields. Views from the summit will be best at sunrise. Though this is the only hike on the list without an ocean view, it is certainly not one to miss.

5. Sears Island

As well as one of the most prominent islands in the region, Sears Island is also home to one of the best golden hour experiences on the Midcoast! Sears Island is another location that provides duality of sunrise and sunset depending on your preference. In the morning, you will witness brilliant colors behind the Great Pond Mountain Wildlands just before the shore is bathed in golden light. If sunset is more your thing, the best spot is at the end of the Jetty Road. The sun shines right down the road before dipping behind the Camden Hills and nearby mountains (sunglasses recommended).
